AND KEEP NEW YORK THE FASHION CAPITAL OF THE WORLD
THIS IS ABOUT JOB SECURITY AND THE FUTURE OF AMERICAN FASHION
DESIGNERS, ELECTED OFFICIALS, FACTORY WORKERS AND STUDENTS WILL BE SPEAKING
SCOTT M. STRINGER, BOROUGH PRESIDENT
"For years we've set aside this portion of the West 30's for the garment industry, and in return, they called our city home, and turned New York into the Fashion Capital of the World. Designers and manufacturers bring billions of dollars in revenue and hundreds of thousands of jobs to our city each year - not to mention the impact they have had in shaping the character of this neighborhood. We need a real plan to keep the garment center intact - one that takes into account our garment industry's long-term needs and survival."
CHRISTINE QUINN, COUNCIL SPEAKER
"Since the early 20th century, New York City's Garment District has been an international symbol of fashion, design, and textile manufacturing. As our global economy evolves, we must work together to support and preserve the future of this historic and irreplaceable industry."
THE APPAREL INDUSTRY IS THE SECOND LARGEST EMPLOYER IN NYC.

BILL THOMPSON, COMPTROLLER
"It's time to remake New York into a City that helps, not hinders, entrepreneurs and small businesses - the heart of our City's economy... New York's reputation as a global fashion capital is under threat with the city's once bustling garment district facing extinction. As Mayor, I will work with manufacturers, the fashion industry and labor unions to arrange fro up to one million square feet of dedicated garment manufacturing space in nonprofit buildings, the amount of space the industry says it requires to thrive and to expand."
